Hennick’s Auspicious Series of Paintings
I like to experiment with colors, tools and materials. Trying different techniques for applying paint to a surface to see how the marks will look interests me. I soak the surface with water from a spray bottle and sand the paint to see what shows up from below. Then I add more paint or matte medium over the smooth surface created by sanding. I scrape and grind the wet paint to create trails and unique textures. Let dry and repeat.
My artworks appear rough and unfinished until the final few layers are added. Then I will sand the paint back in certain areas to reveal unexpected shapes, colors, and forms from beneath the surface. Sometimes I’ll stop and think, “Cool…where did that come from?”
Recently I have experimented with applying paint to paper and then pressing paper over it. When pulling the top piece off of the wet paint on the bottom sheet, it smears and creates intriguing ripples. Pleasantly surprised I further push this process. This is the technique used to create my latest series of auspicious paintings.
